Smith describes his early childhood and education; his attendance at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA, during the Depression, where he studied mathematics under William E. Cleland and Wallace W. McCormick; his master's work in physics at Syracuse University under William Fredrickson and Royal Porter; his teaching appointment at Geneva College; his move to the University of Michigan as a Ph.D. student under Harrison Randall, George Uhlenbeck, Otto Laporte, Richard Crane, Samuel Goudsmit, James Cork, Ralph Sawyer, O. Stanley Duffendack, Floyd A. Firestone, and William Colby; his work with the 39" cyclotron; and his employment in the physics laboratory at Corning Glass Works under Jesse Littleton and Howard Lillie. Smith also discusses his 24 years of work at Corning, his membership in the American Physical Society, his interest in education in the sciences, and his recreational activities.
